The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has commenced an onboarding programme for its newly appointed Statutory Appointees for the four-year 2026–2030 mandate, aimed at strengthening strategic leadership, institutional coherence and effective delivery of the Community’s priorities. The four-day programme, taking place in Abuja from 1 to 4 September 2026, brings together the newly appointed President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. General Birame Diop (Retd.), the Vice President, five Commissioners, the Directors General of the West African Health Organisation (WAHO), GIABA, and the Auditor General of ECOWAS Institutions.
The programme is designed to ensure that the new leadership assumes office with a shared understanding of the Community’s institutional mandate, strategic direction and evolving regional context. It provides the Statutory Appointees with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the political, economic, security and socio-developmental landscape of West Africa, while strengthening their capacity to provide effective strategic leadership and contribute to the achievement of ECOWAS objectives.
Former President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Mohamed Ibn Chambas, and former Commissioner for Administration and Finance, Mrs. Rahamatu Kady Saccoh, shared their experiences, lessons learned and best practices to support the new leadership in advancing regional integration, peace, stability and sustainable development, with particular emphasis on the Community’s institutional architecture and strategic priorities.
The programme further seeks to foster a common leadership vision and strengthen the capacity of the Statutory Appointees to translate the Community’s priorities into concrete actions and measurable results for the peoples of West Africa
