DescriptionOn the 21st and 22nd of October 2025, the ECOWAS Commission held the second virtual meeting of the Subcommittee on Women in Trade to assess the implementation of its three-year work plan and strengthen women's participation in cross-border trade in West Africa.
Sierra Leone's Minister of Gender, Dr Isata Mahoi, commended ECOWAS' efforts to promote women's economic empowerment, while the Director of Trade, Mr Kolawole Sofola, reaffirmed the Commission's commitment to making trade facilitation more inclusive and gender-responsive.
Discussions focused on regional initiatives such as the awareness campaign for women traders in the Abidjan–Lagos corridor and the ECOWAS–ECOBANK programme. Participants recommended better funding for programmes dedicated to women traders and greater involvement of women in border governance to combat harassment and gender-based violence.
