DescriptionCalabar, Nigeria, 21 May 2026 The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission, through its Directorate of Transport, has commenced a monitoring and inspection mission at the Nigeria–Cameroon (Ekok/Mfum) Joint Border Post (JBP) as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen regional integration, facilitate trade, and enhance cross-border mobility within West and Central Africa. The mission, taking place from 18–22 May 2026, is led by Dr. Ashoke MALIKI, Head of Road and Railways at the ECOWAS Directorate of Transport, on behalf of the Director of Transport, ECOWAS Commission. Mr. Chris APPIAH. The objective of the mission is to assess the operational efficiency of the Joint Border Post, evaluate the implementation of its procedures, and examine the functionality of existing infrastructure and inter-agency coordination mechanisms. The team will also review trade facilitation measures, cargo and passenger clearance timelines, and compliance with regional protocols and agreements governing the free movement of persons, goods, and services. In addition, the mission aims to identify operational bottlenecks affecting cross-border trade and transport, while engaging key stakeholders and border management agencies to gather feedback and develop practical recommendations for improving efficiency, security, and seamless connectivity along the corridor. The Ekok/Mfum Joint Border Post, strategically located along the Nigeria–Cameroon border, serves as a vital transit and commercial corridor linking West and Central Africa.
