DescriptionThe ECOWAS Commission on 21 April 2026 in Banjul, The Gambia, convened a high-level Advocacy and Sensitization Workshop under its regional programme on assistive devices for children with disabilities, bringing together government authorities, organisations of persons with disabilities and development partners to identify priority needs and strengthen inclusive service delivery. The opening session featured remarks by Dr Fernando Jorge Alves D’Almada, Principal Programme Officer for Social Affairs of the ECOWAS Commission, Mr Alaye Barra, Director of Social Welfare representing H.E. Mrs Fatou Kinteh, Minister of Gender, Children and Social Welfare of The Gambia, and His Worship Mr Muhammed Krubally, President of the Gambia Federation of the Disabled, highlighting a shared regional commitment to advancing disability inclusion.
Delivering the Minister’s message, her representative reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to ensuring the rights, dignity and full participation of children with disabilities, stressing the importance of access to assistive devices for education, autonomy and social integration. Discussions emphasised the need for coordinated, data-driven responses to address existing gaps. The Banjul meeting marks a key step in scaling up the programme across Member States, with a follow-up mission planned in Senegal, as ECOWAS continues to advance inclusion, equity and social protection in West Africa.
