DescriptionAs part of activities marking the 50th Anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the ECOWAS Commission—through its Early Warning Directorate (EWD)—is hosting a three-day workshop to commemorate two decades of strategic partnership with Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) across West Africa.
The workshop, taking place from 17–19 September 2025 in Abuja, Nigéria, brings together high-level officials and stakeholders, including: Mrs. Hafsatu Garba ABDULKADIR, representative of the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to ECOWAS; Mr. Massimo De LUCA, Head of Cooperation, European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS; Ms. Lea SCHMIDT, Representative of the German Embassy in Nigeria; as well as representatives from the ECOWAS Commission, and Civil Society Organisations from across the region.
Delivering the welcome address on behalf of the Vice-President of the ECOWAS Commission, Dr. Onyinye Onwuka, Acting Director of the Early Warning Directorate, highlighted the Commission’s deepened constructive engagement with CSOs through operational and structural conflict prevention initiatives. These efforts have been anchored on key instruments such as the 1999 Protocol on Conflict Prevention, Management, Resolution, Peacekeeping and Security, and the 2008 ECOWAS Conflict Prevention Framework (ECPF).
