DescriptionThe donation of a brand new car by the People's Republic of China to the Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on Thursday, December 4th, 2025, in Abuja, Nigeria, during the visit of the Chinese ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, is a strong symbolic and diplomatic gesture, illustrating the strengthening of cooperation between Beijing and the regional organization.
This gesture is not only part of a dynamic technical and institutional partnership aimed at further supporting ECOWAS's operational capacities, but also part of ongoing cooperation between the two parties. This cooperation has already materialized in major infrastructure projects such as China's construction of the new headquarters for ECOWAS institutions in Nigeria's federal capital. This construction is also seen as a “symbol of Beijing's commitment” to regional integration.
The new headquarters, known as the “Eye of West Africa” and located along the airport road in Abuja, is nearing completion. Its construction is being subsidized by the People's Republic of China through the China International Development Cooperation Agency (China Aid). It began in November 2022 and will be completed and delivered by the end of January 2026.
