ECOWAS HANDS OVER NEW MATERNITY AND PAEDIATRIC COMPLEX IN BAFATÁ, GUINEA-BISSAU, TO STRENGTHEN HEALTHCARE AND COMMUNITY RESILIENCE

DescriptionThe Vice President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Mrs. Damtien L. Tchintchibidja, presided, on 8 August 2026, in Bafatá, Guinea-Bissau, over the technical handover ceremony of the new Maternity and Paediatric Complex of the Bafatá Regional Hospital, marking a significant milestone in ECOWAS’ efforts to translate regional solidarity into concrete investments in maternal and child health, strengthen community resilience and promote human development. Implemented through the ECOWAS Regional Fund for Stabilisation and Development (FRSD), the investment of US$638,538.05 forms part of the Organisation’s US$1.8 million Direct Investment programme in Guinea-Bissau, responding to the needs of communities in fragile areas and reaffirming ECOWAS’ commitment to building a more resilient, stable and prosperous West Africa. The ceremony was attended by the Minister of Economy, Planning and Regional Integration of Guinea-Bissau, H.E. Mr. Mamadú Mudjetaba Djaló; the Governor of the Bafatá Region, H.E. Mr. Mustafá Soares Cassamá; the Director-General for Regional Integration and Head of the ECOWAS Cell in Guinea-Bissau, Mrs. Cristina da Silva Pedreira; the Director-General of Health Establishments and representative of the Ministry of Public Health, Mr. Evandro Ismael Carlos Pereira; Mr. Cristiano da Silva Pedreira, representative of the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Urban Planning; and Mr. Abduramane Djaló, representative of the National Transition Commission, among other national authorities, health professionals, technical partners and representatives of beneficiary communities. In her remarks, H.E. Mrs. Damtien L. Tchintchibidja reaffirmed ECOWAS’ commitment to a more resilient, stable and prosperous West Africa, stressing that there can be no lasting peace or sustainable development without investment in people, particularly in maternal and child health and the well-being of communities.
