DescriptionECOWAS DONATES SIGNIFICANT QUANTITIES OF MEDICAL AND BIOMEDICAL LABORATORY EQUIPMENT, AS WELL AS AMBULANCES, TO THE GAMBIA TO STRENGTHEN THE CAPACITIES OF THE COUNTRY’S PUBLIC HEALTH SYSTEM. The official handover of this consignment of equipment took place on Thursday 9 July 2026 in Banjul, The Gambia, by H.E. Dr Omar Alieu TOURAY, President of the ECOWAS Commission, in the presence of Dr Melchior Athanase J. C. AISSI, Director General of the West African Health Organisation (WAHO), and H.E. Muhammad B. S. JALLOW, Vice-President of the Republic of The Gambia, accompanied by the Gambian Minister of Health and other ministers and government officials. This high-level ceremony, which took place as part of the Regional COVID-19 Response Project – funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and implemented by WAHO for the benefit of ECOWAS Member States – was also attended by representatives of the African Development Bank and several technical and financial partners. The donation of this significant consignment of medical, biomedical and laboratory equipment, ambulances, as well as IT and information and communication technology equipment, aims to strengthen the capacity of the Gambian national health system in the long term. This initiative illustrates the shared commitment of ECOWAS, WAHO and the African Development Bank to strengthening health security and the resilience of health systems.
