DescriptionThe Forty-Fourth Session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council (MSC) at the Ambassadorial Level opened today in Freetown, bringing together the Permanent Representatives of ECOWAS Member States to review the political, peace, security and humanitarian situation across the region ahead of the forthcoming Summit on the Future of Regional Integration. The Council considered strategic memoranda on the political situation in the region, terrorism and violent extremism, transnational organised crime, maritime security, humanitarian response, electoral assistance, and the update on the operationalisation of the ECOWAS Early Warning and Response architecture, reaffirming the Community's commitment to preventive diplomacy, democratic governance, regional solidarity, through humanitarian interventions and support, and collective security.
Opening the session, the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, H.E. Ambassador Abdel-Fatau Musah, PhD, underscored that West Africa stands at a defining moment requiring unity, strategic foresight and decisive collective action to address evolving regional challenges and advance the Community's vision of peace, security and democratic governance. Chairing the session, H.E. Ambassador Julius F. Sandy, reaffirmed the Permanent Representatives Committee's strategic role in guiding the Council's deliberations and expressed confidence that the recommendations of the Ambassadorial Session would provide a strong foundation for the Ministerial Council and the forthcoming Summit, where Leaders will consider the Compact on the Future of Regional Integration as a roadmap for a more integrated, resilient and prosperous West Africa.
